X Restores Service After Widespread Outage

The social media platform X has reportedly returned online for the majority of its users following a significant outage that began early this morning. The disruption peaked around 9 AM ET, affecting access and functionality for users worldwide.

Feeds were not loading during the outage, an issue that follows closely on the heels of a reported data center incident earlier in the week.

Details of the Disruption

Internet monitoring organizations quickly noted the widespread nature of the issues. Global internet monitor NetBlocks posted that X was “experiencing international outages for some users for a second time in a week.” NetBlocks clarified that these issues were not linked to country-specific internet shutdowns or filtering measures.

Data from outage tracking website Downdetector illustrated the timeline of the problem. Reports of an outage on X surged sharply after 8 AM ET. However, these reports began to decrease about 45 minutes later. As of the latest information, reports had dropped significantly, moving from tens of thousands down to only hundreds, indicating a broad restoration of service.

Users also voiced complaints on other social media platforms regarding difficulties with X over the preceding couple of days. Discussions on platforms like Reddit included screenshots of error messages appearing on the X login screen, with numerous users reporting persistent login problems.

The official incident history log on the X developer platform site confirms a sitewide outage began on Thursday and persisted for approximately 24 hours. Furthermore, the platform status page continues to display an error message indicating degraded performance for “Login with X (OAuth) and other X platform login flows.”

Potential Connection to Data Center Fire

This latest service interruption occurred shortly after a fire was reportedly contained at a data center in Oregon owned by X on Thursday morning. Reports suggest that unnamed sources indicated the fire involved batteries located within one of the data center’s rooms, necessitating an extended response from emergency services.

Following the initial reports of the fire, some users had noted that X was down, although those outages appeared relatively minor compared to the more recent widespread disruption.

X did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment regarding the outage or its potential connection to the data center fire.

Update May 24th: Reports of the outage have now largely subsided, indicating service has been restored for the vast majority of users.
